# SEAT S.A.
SEAT S.A. (Sociedad Española de Automóviles de Turismo) is a Spanish automotive manufacturer headquartered in Martorell, near Barcelona. Founded on May 9, 1950, the company initially produced licensed models from FIAT and Volkswagen before becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of Volkswagen AG in 1986. SEAT has a rich history of innovation, including the development of iconic models like the Ibiza and Toledo, and has been part of the Volkswagen Group since 2002.
## History
SEAT was established through a consortium including the Spanish National Institute of Industry (51%), six Spanish banks (42%), and Italian automaker FIAT (7%). The first model, the SEAT 1400, was produced under license from FIAT's pre-war 1400 model. Production began at the newly built Zona Franca plant in Barcelona in 1950. In 1957, the SEAT 600, licensed from FIAT, entered production.
In 1973, SEAT opened its Technical Center in Martorell, which became operational in 1975. By 1980, FIAT had sold its 7% stake to the Spanish National Institute of Industry, making SEAT fully Spanish-owned. On September 30, 1982, SEAT signed a cooperation agreement with Volkswagen AG, and in 1986, Volkswagen acquired a 51% stake, eventually increasing its ownership to 99.99% by 1990. That year, the company rebranded from Sociedad Española de Automóviles de Turismo to the shorter name SEAT.
In 1991, SEAT launched the first model developed in collaboration with Volkswagen, the Toledo, based on the Golf II platform. The company became part of the Volkswagen Group in 2002, alongside Audi and Lamborghini, and established its new headquarters in Martorell in 2006.
